History

The Rotary Club of Wortley held its Inaugural Meeting on Monday 20th September 1971.  The club received its Charter confirming it as a member club of Rotary International at a presentation held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Sheffield on 31st January 1972.  There were 35 charter members.   The club was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Sheffield and originally met  on Monday lunchtimes, but changed in 1987 to a club meeting on Monday evenings at 6.45 for 7.15p.m.  The club held its inaugural meeting at the Whitley Hall Hotel, Grenoside, Sheffield in 1971 and continued to meet there until August 2021. The club meetings are now being held every fortnight at Wortley Hall.

The club takes its name from the former Wortley Rural District Council which, at the time, was the largest RDC in England and which disappeared in the local government reorganisation in 1974.  The former boundaries of Wortley RDC form the territorial limits of the Wortley Rotary Club.
